Caruso is in an unmistakable class of his own.
When I was a kid in 1957 my father, an engineer by profession and just a casual amateur singer, won an eisteddfod singing this song. He trained by listening to this Caruso recording on a wind-up phonograph. I've probably only heard the recording two or three times in the last 50 years. Brings tears to my eyes.
I spent years in electronics and professional low distortion sound systems listening to the best Hi Fi sound available yet I can still come back to these lovely old 78s and just listen to them with absolute pleasure. The noise, limited frequency response, and distortion just seem to melt away and don't bother me. There's just something about Caruso that puts him in an unmistakable class of his own.
